“One day we went to a building. I was three. It was my birthday ‘surprise’. They asked me to wait at the steps and said they were coming back ‘in a jiffy’ with something special for me. I waited. And waited. And waited. Then the door opened and a lady came out. She was hard-faced but not unkind. She asked me who I was and what I was doing there. I said I was waiting for my parents. She asked me where I lived. I said I didn’t know. I really didn’t know because we lived nowhere and everywhere. She took me inside. It was an orphanage. I’d been abandoned. I guess I was lucky that they cared enough to leave me on the steps of an orphanage instead of just disappearing and leaving me on the streets. It was some form of caring that they did that,” Jade said in a shaking voice, hurt barely hidden.
